Alluvial gold or reef gold: what equipment do you need?

Where your gold sits decides the right detector and whether you need a wash plant.

Alluvial gold has been carried by water. It is found in rivers, streams, old river beds and the gravel and soil around them, often as small pieces and flakes.

For alluvial work, a waterproof high-frequency detector like the Gold Kruzer helps you find the gold-bearing spots, and a sluice box wash plant lets you wash large amounts of gravel and keep the fine gold that a detector cannot see.

Reef or hard-rock gold sits in quartz veins and the ground around them. Pieces can be deeper and the ground is often hard and mineralised, which is where a pulse induction detector like the Magnetar 9000 is the stronger choice.

Many sites have both: nuggets in the soil above a reef, and fine gold in the stream below it. Tell us what is found around your site and we will help you put together the right equipment.
